When you travel you want your items to be super safe, because we've all heard stories of items missing from suitcases and so forth. Not to mention how many people travel with the dreaded "black suitcase" so it's torture when you're at luggage claim and 20 black suitcases are riding that carousel. It's kinda of funny to see people trying to make their luggage standout by putting a piece of Christmas decoration and or over a tie a knot etc all in the name of identifying their luggage as it does it's "hope my owner finds me dance".
